The songs, dances, objects, and attire used by the Lakota in their performances are considered by many to be among the most vital traditional cultural traits preserved by contemporary Lakota society. While singing and dancing undeniably continue to play an important role in Lakota life, it is also important to recognize that their apparent prominence is largely due to the greater visibility of these activities in traditional tribal attire. This text aims to provide introductory material on both traditional and contemporary secular forms of Lakota singing and dancing, especially since the natural or traditional methods of acquiring such knowledge often do not reach the majority of people.
